Despite the U.S. being one of the wealthiest countries in the world, in 2018 an estimated one in nine Americans were food insecure, more than 37 million people--including more than 11 million children. Food insecurity-- the disruption of food intake or eating patterns because of lack of money and other resources--often can be traced to poverty, unstable housing, and unemployment and can exacerbate acute and chronic health care conditions and mental health challenges. During the holiday season and especially during this COVID pandemic when even more are at risk, we are reminded of how many go without in our country of plenty.
Join us for this lunchtime colloquium to learn about food insecurity in Pennsylvania. Our presenters will focus on efforts by government and NGOs to tackle this issue, from statewide and frontline perspectives. The colloquium will ask how we, as public health and sustainability professionals, scholars, and students, can help alleviate food insecurity and place these efforts into our larger framework of creating a healthy, sustainable Pennsylvania for all.
