Marginalized communities across Pennsylvanian are disproportionately exposed to environmental hazards and have historically been excluded from or underrepresented in environmental justice activities. Environmental justice means that all are included in the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental regulations, laws, and policies. EJ in PA is a virtual event hosted by Harrisburg University and the Pennsylvania Environmental Resource Consortium (PERC) that aims to educate and empower residents regarding environmental justice issues throughout Pennsylvania.
The goals for EJ in PA are to encourage conversation and create connection among community members to identify actions and outcomes that will be supported through resources and networking after the event through a group of EJ community hubs. Mustafa Santiago Ali, a fierce environmental justice advocate, will be the keynote speaker for the event. Following Dr. Ali’s speech and live Q&A, attendees will join regional EJ hubs. The EJ community hubs will provide a space for local dialogue that will lead to a long-lasting connection within the community. EJ in PA serves as the kickoff event for the hub activity. Those joining an EJ community hub should be willing to commit to continued and Pennsylvania-focused EJ dialogue and involvement after today’s event.
